STV’s Renovation Project at Kutztown University Wins Award from CMAA’s Mid-Atlantic Chapter

STV’s work on the renovation and addition to the Schaeffer Auditorium building at Kutztown University in Kutztown, PA, received a 2014 Project Recognition Award from the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter in its annual awards competition. The project won in the Higher Education Renovation Projects under $20 Million category.

STV served as owner’s representative and provided construction management services for the complete renovation of the 32,000-square-foot auditorium building on the Kutztown University campus, as well as a 23,000-square-foot building addition.

An awards ceremony honoring all of this year’s winners will be held on June 24.

Since its opening in 1940, the auditorium has been an iconic cultural and academic resource for Kutztown University and the surrounding community. The university embarked on the renovation and addition to revitalize the facility and accommodate the needs of a rapidly expanding music program.

The extensive renovation of the three-level auditorium included the replacement of the original slate roof and wood windows and doors, as well as stage rigging and theater lighting systems. Replacement seating for 826 patrons was installed along with new motorized blackout window shades and draperies, a new sound booth and entrance light locks. The chandelier and wall sconces were refurbished, and ornate plaster moldings were repaired in the auditorium. Customizable, motorized acoustical banners were added to all hard wall surfaces. Other renovations involved the entrance lobby, box office and restroom facilities, rebuilding of the front of the stage, adding an orchestra pit, and applying new color schemes for ceilings, walls and woodwork.

The new L-shaped addition provides additional music classrooms and rehearsal areas, dressing rooms, passenger and freight elevators, a load-in dock, restroom facilities and storage areas. It also houses a new 2,500-square-foot large rehearsal hall for the school’s music department, which was designed acoustically to accommodate the Kutztown University marching band practices without any sound transfers into adjacent classroom spaces.

The auditorium re-opened in September 2013.
