Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation Design-Build (Boston and Cambridge, MA)
STV is serving as lead designer as part of the $255 million design-build effort to rehabilitate the Longfellow Bridge, a 2,135-foot arch span structure that carries Route 3 and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Red Line over the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge. It is considered the state’s most historically significant bridge. The firm is providing multidisciplinary services, including structural, civil, and electrical lighting design for the bridge, as well as plans for trackwork, traction power, communications, and signals for the Red Line. When complete, the bridge will be restored to its original appearance. Pedestrian access will be made Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant and bicycle access will be improved by reducing the number of outbound car lanes toward Cambridge from two lanes to one.
