Metuchen Frequency Converter Improvements and Design of Related Infrastructure (Edison, NJ)
STV provided design services for the addition of two new 30 MW frequency converters at an existing Amtrak frequency converter station located approximately 1.5 miles from the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor rail line. The firm prepared complete design-build procurement documents for the new converter station that includes two 230 kV, 60 Hz underground power supply circuits from the local utility, two 30 MW static frequency converter units, and two 13.2 kV, 25 Hz output circuits to an Amtrak 13.2-138 kV step-up substation.
STV also provided final design contract documents for an expansion of the step-up substation that involved an in-service rebuild of the entire facility and the installation of two 138 kV underground transmission lines from the step-up substation to the NEC right-of-way. In addition, the firm provided 100% design contract documents for the reconstruction and expansion of the existing 25-Hz outdoor step-up substation.
