STV was contracted by Metro-North Railroad to provide project management and engineering assistance in the procurement of GE Genesis series II passenger locomotives. The locomotives provided a boost to Metro-North commuter trains operating to and from non-electrified territory into New York City’s Grand Central Terminal by allowing engineers to seamlessly transition from diesel power to emission-free third-rail power when entering the Park Avenue tunnel into Manhattan.

The Genesis II incorporates state-of-the-art technology, including a distributed computer control, an electronic brake system, and sophisticated diagnostics that monitor the locomotive performance. In a remarkable step forward, the operators console is equipped with LCD displays that provide all vital operating information and allow “touch screen” interrogation of the locomotive system.
