Monseñor Oscar Romero Charter School

YPI Charter Schools, a nonprofit organization based in Southern California with a mission to equip low-income students for academic success and community participation, contracted with STV to provide construction and project management services for a new Monseñor Oscar Romero Charter School in Los Angeles.

The $23 million facility, located on the existing campus of Berendo Middle School, will serve approximately 375 students in grades six to eight. The program consists of three new buildings, including a new administration building, a multipurpose building with a small kitchen, and a two-story building housing 16 classrooms. Other project elements include the demolition of existing retaining walls and surfacing improvements for an existing playground, as well as an installation of new retaining walls, underground parking and other site improvements. One of the most significant challenges of this project was constructing an entirely new campus within the footprint of the existing campus, without impacting on-going activities.
