STV BIM Specialist Honored by Prestigious Industry Publication

Vahid Balali, Ph.D., a project controls specialist in STV’s Construction Management Division in Los Angeles, has been named to the prestigious Consulting-Specifying Engineer (CSE) magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 list for 2017. Now in its 10th year, the annual program honors 40 nonresidential building industry professionals age 40 and younger who stand out in a variety of personal and professional aspects of their lives. Balali and the rest of the 2017 class will receive their awards from CSE in October.

Since joining STV in 2014, he has conducted extensive research into the use of technologies for project planning and decision-making. A key member of the firm’s BIM 456 initiative, Vahid has used innovative search engine technology that integrates into project design, scheduling, cost estimating and other project controls functions.

“Vahid is critical in our division’s mission of delivering cutting edge construction management services and technology solutions,” said Sam Yu, vice president of STV’s Construction Management Division. “Vahid’s work ethic and interpersonal skills have helped bridge the gap between less technically savvy engineers and construction managers. He is a pleasure to work with and has been a tremendous resource for my staff regarding information and Building Information Modeling systems.”

Balali has experience in both his native Iran and the U.S., and has supported the design and construction of a variety of bridge, highway and commercial projects over the course of his career. He is currently helping to build a comprehensive BIM model for the multi-billion-dollar redevelopment of New York’s LaGuardia Airport, on behalf of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.

Balali has published multiple research papers on the use of visual data sensing and analytics; virtual design and construction for infrastructure asset management; and smart cities in transportation for sustainable infrastructure decision-making. He is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers serving on three different committees, and is a member of the Construction Management Association of America.
