STV Leading Design for Route 8 Bridge Rehabilitation, and Safety Improvements in Connecticut
Jul 11, 2022
STV, a leader in engineering, architectural, and program and construction management services, announced today that it will serve as the lead designer for the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (CTDOT) $77 million Route 8 improvement program between Shelton and Seymour, CT. Empire Paving, Inc., will lead the design-build team.
STV will provide a full suite of design and construction phase services for Route 8’s roadway and bridge rehabilitation, guiderail and median barrier improvements and environmental and water resource permitting and management. This program is the fifth project in Connecticut history using the design-build delivery method.
“CTDOT is making incredible strides to accelerate and improve the safety along the heavily trafficked Route 8 corridor,” said Michael Oliver, P.E., STV senior associate and engineering director. “Bringing together two firms in STV and Empire Paving, who have extensive institutional knowledge of design-build project delivery, will allow us to provide this much needed upgrade to the community faster than traditional delivery methods.”
The project’s scope consists of the rehabilitation of Route 8’s concrete slab base and new bridge overlay, which will provide CTDOT with a 30-year serviceable lifespan across the 8.8-mile stretch. The project team will utilize precast concrete to help mitigate delays that are typical of conventional paving methods.
Empire Paving, Inc. and STV have a long-standing collaborative partnership that has helped deliver vital transportation and infrastructure projects throughout Connecticut, including the I-84 Waterbury Emergency Reconstruction in 2007, the New Britain - Hartford Busway CTfastrak project in 2012 and the recent I-95 Interchange 33 Reconstruction project in Stratford.
STV has provided engineering, design and other professional services for projects in Connecticut for more than 60 years. The firm’s bridge capabilities include coastal bridges as well as bridge widenings and replacement projects for fixed, movable, long-span and viaduct structures. The firm has worked on such iconic structures as Arrigoni Bridge and the Reconstruction of I-95 Interchange 33 in Connecticut. The firm has also supported a broad range of rail and transit initiatives for CTDOT including improvements at the New Haven Rail Yard Complex, the West Haven Station and CTRail Hartford Line.
