Commodore John Barry Elementary School
STV’s served as the construction manager as part of an ambitious five-year capital improvement program in support of the School District of Philadelphia. One of the facilities in this program was Commodore John Barry Elementary School, which had been destroyed in a fire. The district enlisted STV to provide construction management for a new 94,000 square-foot elementary school. Construction was conducted under an aggressive schedule so that the more than 640 students, who had been assigned to a temporary space, could be welcomed back to their new school as quickly as possible. The completed building accommodates students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and features 46 classrooms, a library, gymnasium, cafeteria/auditorium, administrative offices, and instructional spaces for art, music, computer, and science education.
As the construction manager and owner’s representative, STV oversaw a detailed schedule to facilitate and expedite all phases of construction. The firm also played a significant role in achieving LEED Gold Certification for the facility by managing and preserving design documentation, without which the total calculated points would have remained at the Silver level.
