George R. Vierno Center Addition Design-Build

To relieve prison overcrowding in New York City, the New York City Department of General Services added 500 cells to the George R. Vierno Correctional Center (GRVC). As part of a design-build team, STV provided complete architectural and engineering services.  It included five new 100-bed, secure housing units in two structures, one with 300 cells and the other with 200 cells, that were linked to the main facility through connecting corridors. The design challenge was to meet a strict schedule while at the same time creating a functional, humane, secure facility for both inmates and staff. By selecting precast concrete modular cells delivered to the island by barge, STV expedited fabrication, and erection of the structures. The finished housing units have program spaces, large dayrooms, and windows for ample light and exterior views.
