Howard Station Renovation CTA

Serving as the transfer point between the Purple, Red, and Yellow Lines, Howard Station is the final stop along the northbound route of the Red Line, the busiest line in the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) system. This historic station was in need of renovations and accessibility upgrades to improve connectivity to the rapid transit system, as well as pedestrian flow throughout the facility.

As part of a multiyear task order contract, CTA contracted with STV to provide construction management services for Howard’s $62 million renovation. The program included renovations of the station’s Howard Street entrance, construction of a new ADA-compliant entrance at Paulina Street, construction of administrative offices to the 3-level station and rewiring of signal communications systems.

As construction manager, STV inspected construction work, estimated and processed change orders, and facilitated quality control and safety management needs while coordinating the project’s complex schedule to keep the existing station in operation throughout construction. In addition to the crucial ADA upgrades, the firm oversaw the restoration of terra cotta stone facades, new granite flooring, and upgrades to the station’s communication systems to include a new public address sound system with customer emergency call functions for this nearly 80-year-old station.
