Long Slip Fill and Rail Enhancement

The Long Slip Fill and Rail Enhancement Program strives to allow NJ TRANSIT to recover more quickly and resume commuter rail operations following a storm event. The project will fill in the existing Long Slip – a 2,000-foot former barrage canal adjacent to the historic Hoboken Terminal and Yard complex in New Jersey – to eliminate it as a conduit for flood water. When Superstorm Sandy struck the New York/New Jersey region in 2012, Long Slip was inundated by the tidal surge which contributed to the flooding of Hoboken Terminal and Yard.

STV is providing construction management and inspection services to fill in Long Slip and construct six new tracks on that area, which will serve three high-level ADA-accessible boarding platforms. The elevated tracks and platforms will enable limited passenger service to be maintained if Hoboken Terminal is taken offline due to flooding or other severe weather events.
