SR 6247, Section 204/Valley View Business Park Access Road
STV successfully addressed numerous engineering challenges to design State Route (SR) 6247 on a mountainous site scarred by abandoned coal mines. The three-mile, two-lane access route serves the 1,300-acre Jessup Small Business Center/Valley View Business Park and the PEI Power Park. The recently constructed section of the new road allows for development of an additional 560 acres of Valley View Business Park. To provide safe transportation and support development goals, SR 6247 was designed to meet Pennsylvania Department of Transportation urban collector roadway criteria. The location in an Exceptional Value (EV) watershed required extreme environmental sensitivity. STV's team protected Grassy Island Creek, the EV stream, by creating a vegetated buffer that prevents coal particles from washing into the creek. A specially designed “seepage interceptor” maintains water flow to wetlands that would otherwise have lost their source of moisture. The project was completed under budget and on schedule.
