Water Main and Sanitary Sewer Lines for the CATS LYNX Blue Line Extension
In addition to performing preliminary and detailed engineering designs for Charlotte Area Transit System’s (CATS) LYNX Blue Line Extension (BLE) service, STV supported the relocation of 35,000 linear feet of up to 30-inch water main pipes and 9,000 feet of up to 24-inch sewer lines along the 9.3-mile corridor.
All work remained in compliance with American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association and Charlotte Water standards. With much of these water mains and sewer lines located in North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) or North Carolina Rail Road (NCRR) rights-of-way, STV’s design team worked closely with the agencies as well as the Norfolk Southern staff to coordinate permits and placement. The firm’s final design integrated multiple crossings under the rail corridor and required 4,000 feet of steel casing to protect iron water mains, and a 30-inch reinforced concrete sewer main. The project also included cured-in-place pipe for an existing 30-inch reinforced concrete pipe gravity sewer main and the replacement of 30-inch prestressed concrete cylinder pipe.
