Reconstruction of Harrison Street Viaduct CM

Located in downtown Chicago near Union Station, the Harrison Street viaduct is an important passage for freight truck, vehicular, pedestrian, and cyclist commuters. As part of the Chicago Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) initiative to rehabilitate structures carrying aboveground traffic, the Harrison Street viaduct was identified as a substantial replacement. The $21 million reconstruction will restore the viaduct’s functionality by bringing it up to current standards and extending its useful life.

STV is providing construction management services for the staged removal and replacement of the 780-foot-long viaduct. The scope of work also includes two new ADA-compliant sidewalks and one bike lane in each direction, roadway resurfacing and reconstruction, and related roadway work. Construction is being phased to minimize impacts to stakeholders and the surrounding community. The firm is conducting extensive coordination with numerous groups including Amtrak, Metra, Union Station, and a nearby U.S. Postal Service Central Distribution facility to mitigate any potential impacts to the area.
