In collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Bureau of Public Transportation (BPT), STV recently marked a significant milestone with the completion of two state-of-the-art bus maintenance and storage facilities that will accommodate compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.
In Hazle Township, PA, STV spearheaded the design of a new 50,000-square-foot bus maintenance and storage facility on behalf of Hazleton Public Transit (HPT). The facility represents one of the largest projects ever undertaken by this local agency. HPT received a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program, which provides federal resources for fixed-route service providers to develop a more efficient and sustainable public transport system, to support this project.
The new facility houses the local fleet of CNG buses and features a CNG fueling station on an approximately 4-acre site north of the Hazleton Regional Airport. Additionally, it provides climate-controlled indoor storage for approximately 20 to 25 buses, with three full bus maintenance bays, a bus washer, and a comprehensive administrative and training area.
STV provided overall project management, civil and site design, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, industrial, environmental and communications design, and overall project quality assurance for this facility. During construction, STV also supported the contractor with shop drawing review, review of change order requests, as-built documentation and construction closeout.
In addition to the Hazleton project, STV also concluded its work on behalf the Westmoreland County Transit Authority with the completion of a new bus storage facility in Greensburg, PA. This facility accommodates a fleet of 24 45-foot CNG buses.
STV provided final design services, delivery of construction plans and related agency approvals for the new building itself, as well as assessments and designs for on-site access to parking, turning areas, site access from Route 66 and a retaining wall.
With STV having started work on both projects in spring 2019 and summer 2020 respectively, construction for both was completed in April. Project Manager Stephen Diehl represented STV at the ribbon-cutting ceremonies, celebrating the realization of both projects that will serve their local communities for years to come.
