As senior director for STV’s Southeast Cities Initiative, John Mitchell works closely with local leadership to translate city priorities into actionable infrastructure. This expertise will guide his participation in the 94th U.S. Conference of Mayors, a gathering of leaders from cities of 30,000 or more who come together to engage directly with Federal leadership on the issues most critical to their communities.
Drawing on his firsthand experience advising elected representatives, Mitchell provides insight into how STV builds meaningful engagement with cities’ leadership, senior staff and key decision-makers to support stronger communities.
1. How has your background in municipal leadership shaped the way you approach your work?
After more than a decade in, or in support of city government, I recognized the value of professional services in bridging gaps between a city’s priorities and execution. STV’s nimble approach allows us to meet communities where they are: whether in terms of funding, staffing or project readiness. Bringing that context into account enables us to support mayors and their teams while respecting the nuances of local governance.
2. How does STV’s participation at the U.S. Conference of Mayors support that mindset?
At this conference, we can gain direct insight into the priorities and thematic challenges facing city leadership. Ultimately, we can collaborate with municipal leaders in ways that are practical, informed and responsive to the communities they serve. Additionally, we can help identify peer cities and connect leaders and key staff. There’s great value in fostering a relationship that bridges gaps, enables knowledge sharing and is a great tool for building a deeper bank of trust.
3. What does an effective partnership between cities and professional services firms look like in practice?
Too often, firms make assumptions about what cities need without understanding the internal dynamics or operational processes. At STV, we combine deep technical expertise with operational awareness, enabling us to work with cities as collaborators rather than outsiders. The focus is on offering our insight when it’s most helpful, without overshadowing the team we’re supporting’s priorities.
4. What does STV bring to municipal clients today?
STV’s ability to offer both breadth and depth of expertise allows us to serve communities of all sizes, particularly those that may not have extensive infrastructure capacity in place. We provide guidance while remaining attuned to the political and operational realities of local governments. Together, that approach enables us to lift up cities and support decision-makers in ways that are responsive to local needs. Ultimately, that work allows us to contribute to the communities we live in, work in and care about.
