Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA – STV, a professional services firm that plans, designs and manages infrastructure projects across North America, recently received the Notice to Proceed for the design of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority’s (MARTA) latest operations and maintenance facility in Clayton County. Once complete, the facility will accommodate a fleet of 250 compressed natural gas, diesel and electric buses.

The brand-new facility will replace the existing Hamilton facility, with an eye toward accommodating an increase in future battery-electric buses. The structure will also include a wellness building on site with a gym, police precinct and a training facility for law enforcement.

“This facility is going to be an excellent resource for the community,” said Jeff Messinger, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, vice president and senior engineering operations manager at STV. “Our team is hard at work to incorporate thoughtful designs for sustainability, longevity and adaptability. My hope is to engage with the nearby community of professionals to host events once the project is underway.”

As MARTA plans to phase out their diesel buses by 2032, STV’s project team will future proof the design infrastructure with duct banks strategically placed so the battery electric bus (BEB) charging capabilities can be expanded to accommodate the changing fleet. This $150 million investment is a demonstration of MARTA’s goal to provide transit for Clayton County as a result of the More MARTA initiative.

STV’s bus engineering team received its first engineering consulting services contract for MARTA in 2016, performing in-plant inspections for 18 compressed natural gas articulated buses.

The firm has a long and successful track record of bus maintenance facility work, boasting various services for more than 50 facilities across the country since 2008. Recent projects include the Jamaica Bus Depot in Queens and the Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot in New York City; the South Bay Bus Operations and Maintenance Facility in Chula Vista, California; and the Worcester Regional Transit Authority’s vehicle maintenance storage and operations facility in Massachusetts.
