The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) recently announced its 2023 Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) winners. The longstanding EEA tradition honors member firms for design achievements of superior skill and ingenuity. We are pleased to share that STV won four awards this year.
Receiving a prestigious Diamond Award in the Special Projects category was Delta’s Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) project in Queens. Winning the Diamond Award qualifies the project for ACEC’s 2023 National EEA.
STV served as Delta Air Lines’ construction manager-as-agent for its Terminal C project, which is part of LGA’s $8 billion redevelopment. Our construction and program management team, along with our joint venture partner Satterfield & Pontikes Construction, provided a full array of services in the execution of 21 sub-projects.
Terminal C’s new 457,000-square-foot headhouse (arrivals and departures; pictured above) and Concourse E and its reimagined road network opened in June 2022. These are crucial elements of the larger $4 billion Terminal C project that will consolidate Delta’s operations into a 1.3-million-square-foot state-of-the-art facility featuring 37 gates across four concourses.
Two of STV projects also won Platinum Awards.
The NEPA Categorical Exclusions for Park Avenue Viaduct (PAV) Replacement project won a Platinum Award in the Studies, Research, and Consulting Engineering Services category. This critically important Metro-North Railroad project will repair/replace existing infrastructure to increase capacity and maintain safe, reliable, and efficient service. The PAV stretches almost two miles through the heart of East Harlem and provides direct access to Grand Central Terminal. It is used by approximately 98 percent of all Metro-North trains carrying roughly 200,000 passengers every weekday.
STV collaborated with Metro-North on the production of a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Categorical Exclusion for the project. The project team developed construction plans, schedules, and a proposed traffic detour to best serve customers and minimize disruptions to operations and the community.
The Harrison Place Substation Design-Build project in Brooklyn won a Platinum Award in the Transportation category. New York City Transit constructed the Harrison Place Substation in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood to generate traction power for a new Communications-Based Train Controlling (BCTC) signaling system on the Canarsie L subway line.
STV served as lead designer for the project, and as engineer-of-record, providing final structural, geotechnical, architectural, and civil designs, as well as construction phase services. The design-build team worked together to minimize impacts to commercial and residential traffic. A box-shaped floor plan was selected to optimize space and reduce seismic motions and construction risk to adjacent buildings.
Rounding out our 2023 awards, the Brooklyn Developmental Center Mixed-Use Redevelopment EIS project received a Silver Award in the Studies, Research, and Consulting Engineering Services category. STV provided a full range of environmental services for this mixed-use development project, which added 2,623 affordable housing units and 455,000 square feet of space for health services, retail, and public amenities on a 27-acre portion of the former Brooklyn Developmental Center site.
The project will promote health and economic opportunities in East New York, one of the most economically disadvantaged and historically underserved areas of the state.
Winners will be honored at the 56th Annual EEA Gala in March.
