STV’s Director of Sustainable Design Lauren Alger, PE, EVP SP, and Principal and Senior Engineering Operations Manager Amar Maniar, PE, PMP, LEED AP BD+C, ENV SP, were named two of Consulting-Specifying Engineer (CSE) magazine’s 40 Under 40 emerging leaders in the building industry.

The annual program celebrates young professionals from across the United States for their dedication to their craft and the industry, as well as their commitment to communities within their personal and professional lives. CSE magazine covers the nonresidential building industry, highlighting projects and industry advancements for commercial, industrial, government, healthcare and high-tech buildings. Profiles of Alger and Maniar can be found on CSE’s website.

Both Alger and Maniar were recognized by CSE for their work that intersects engineering and social impact, particularly in supporting sustainability and resilience programs.

Alger leads STV’s sustainable design practice, which weaves sustainable design into ongoing projects and fosters the firm’s culture of sustainable thinking. As part of a groundbreaking study with one of the firm’s largest transportation clients Alger developed data-driven performance metrics to measure the client’s integration of resilience, sustainability and equity within the design and construction phases of their projects.

“Being recognized by CSE is truly an honor and reflects so much of the work that our team has accomplished here at STV in reimagining our sustainable design practices,” said Alger, who also co-founded and chairs the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Infrastructure 2050 group. “We are continuously working to develop a culture at STV that prioritizes and promotes sustainable designs within our projects–I’m so honored to see our efforts recognized at this level.”

“Since Lauren joined STV in 2022, she has transformed our firm’s commitment to sustainability and sustainable design practices,” said Marcos Diaz Gonzalez, executive vice president and director of STV’s Centers of Excellence who works closely with Alger. “She is a driving force behind the sustainability and decarbonization movements and her impact in the industry will be felt for many decades.”

Alger is part of a multidisciplinary team developing the firm’s new Sustainability Action Plan and Embodied Carbon Action plans—both comprehensive strategies to reducing environmental impacts across the firm’s multidisciplinary design services.

“I’m honored to be part of CSE’s 40 Under 40 amongst incredible peers,” said Maniar, who is a senior member of the leading electrical engineering organization, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and part of the IEEE Energy Policy Committee. “Much of my work centers on creating solutions that prioritize our clients’ needs and think ahead to the future, whether that be through a focus on climate resilience, energy efficient systems or alternative technical concepts.”

Maniar’s expertise in electrical and computer engineering is instrumental to the ongoing development of New York City’s first-ever Waterfront Code that will regulate how structures are designed, constructed, and maintained along the city’s piers and docks. Maniar also provided electrical engineering designs for New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s program to safeguard 13 wastewater pumping stations against flooding, resulting in reduced points of failure and increased flood resistance throughout four boroughs. He also has published articles on low-voltage switchboard design and medium-voltage switchgear design and hosted podcasts focused on sustainability for Project Management Institute’s UK Chapter.

“Amar has dedicated himself and his work to advancing electrical engineering and science while driving designs that emphasize efficiency and sustainability for our clients and the environment,” said Floyd Keels, PE, electrical engineering chief within STV’s national Buildings group and Maniar’s manager.
