James Gunter, an assistant project manager at STV in Houston, has completed the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Houston/Galveston Post Leadership Development Program, a respected initiative that cultivates future leaders in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry.

The program brings together early- and mid-career professionals in a structured leadership experience centered on management principles, collaboration, mentorship and professional growth. Participants take part in guided discussions, book studies and peer learning to examine real-world leadership challenges, and opportunities within the industry.

“Being part of this program pushed me to look at leadership in new ways,” Gunter said. “Learning alongside peers from across the industry helped me sharpen how I communicate, support my team and approach complex challenges. I was proud to represent STV and bring those perspectives back to our projects.”

Through the program, Gunter was exposed to a range of leadership approaches shaped by real project and team experiences. The program’s discussion-based format created space for peers to openly share both successes and challenges, offering perspectives that continue to inform how he approaches leadership today.

Those conversations reinforced the importance of leading with flexibility – knowing when to offer guidance and how to adapt leadership approaches to different working styles. These insights are shaping his work at STV, where he emphasizes team support, clear communication and steady development.

“James brings a thoughtful, people‑first approach to every project, and this program helped him further strengthen those leadership skills,” said Brian Jones, PE, vice president and East Texas area manager at STV. “Supporting opportunities like this is an important part of how we grow talent at STV – developing leaders who support their teams, deliver for clients and help make our communities better.”
