The Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal A earned a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New Jersey chapter. The organization recognized the new 1-million-square foot terminal in its Built Open category during its recent AIA NJ awards gala. The annual design awards celebrate transformative projects that impact local communities and reflect a commitment to creativity, innovation and excellence.

STV served as the architect-and engineer-of-record, in association with Grimshaw and on behalf of Tutor Perini/Parsons, for the new three-level, 33-gate LEED® Gold Certified domestic terminal. The firm also designed the 660-foot-long pedestrian bridge that connects the terminal to a consolidated rental car facility and an associated generator building.

Boasting floor-to-ceiling windows and a brand-new departures and arrivals hall, the new terminal represents the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s largest-ever investment in New Jersey and is a key part of the aviation renaissance happening in the New York Metropolitan region.

Since opening to travelers in January 2023, Terminal A received several accolades for its modern design that streamlines travel for the 15 million passengers that passed through the terminal in its first year. Last year, Skytrax gave Terminal A a five-star rating—making it one of only two airport terminals in North America to receive this prestigious rating. The project also earned the 2023 Prix Versailles Special Prize for an Exterior from UNESCO, the 2024 Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and the 2024 Grand Award from ACEC New Jersey.
