The Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) Terminal A was recently named the 2023 Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) New Jersey Section. STV was honored as an award recipient for its role as architect/engineer-of-record on the $2.7 billion redevelopment of the terminal.

Opened in January 2023, the project is the largest design-build infrastructure project in New Jersey state history. EWR’s new 1-million-square-foot, 33-gate domestic Terminal A, which replaced the existing terminal, can now accommodate more than 13.4 million annual travelers. The project also features new bridge structures approaching the departures level, a pedestrian bridge connecting the terminal to a newly consolidated rental car facility, and 1.5 million square feet of new concrete airfield paving.

“Our STV team did incredible work to transform Terminal A into a modern masterpiece that will serve travelers from around the world for years to come,” said STV Vice President, Technical Director and the project’s Structural Engineering Lead Chris Cerino, P.E., F.SEI, DBIA. “This project is the first piece of EWR’s 50-year redevelopment plan, and the ASCE NJ award recognizes the pivotal role it plays in not only EWR’s future, but also the future of aviation for the entire New York and New Jersey region.”

The new three-level terminal building features soaring floor-to-ceiling windows in the arrivals and departures hall, where a new check-in area allows for a more efficient process for passengers. STV designed key features of the program, including the first, fully automatic security checkpoint in the country. State-of-the-art technology systems include a new automated bin sequencing and retrieval system as well as user-friendly body screening and metal detecting equipment, with innovative sensor technology throughout the terminal. The terminal also features public art installations from 29 local artists, whose works pay homage to New Jersey’s history, culture, and people.

STV served as the architect- and engineer-of-record for the terminal building, as well as a 660-foot-long pedestrian bridge and generator building, with Grimshaw serving as design architect. The design-build team was led by Tutor Perini/Parsons.

ASCE NJ will honor the project at its 47th Annual Awards dinner in May. The project also received the 2022 Grand Award from the New Jersey chapter of the American Concrete Institute and was also named one of the world’s best new airport terminals at the 2023 World Airport Awards by Skytrax.
