STV’s bridge experts were recently recognized at the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s (PTC) annual Construction Management Conference (CMC) in Harrisburg, PA.
Our team members, which included Jeremy Jelus and Theresa Davies, P.E., presented on two active PTC construction projects: Huckleberry Road Bridge Replacement, which utilized accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques, and Hawk Falls Bridge Replacement, while the Huckleberry Road Bridge team was honored for their outstanding contributions to Pennsylvania’s bridge infrastructure.
STV performed construction management services for the $7 million Huckleberry Road ABC Bridge Replacement project, which replaced the existing bridge NB-363 on Interstate 476 in South Whitehall Township and wrapped up in late 2022. Jeremy was the project’s resident engineer and conducted the presentation at CMC. The presentation highlighted how the new bridge was constructed in its entirety next to the existing bridge on elevated falsework, which allowed the construction team to demolish the old bridge and slide in the new bridge deck over a 55-hour span in one weekend. This was the PTC’s fifth project to use this modern ABC method. STV has been instrumental in several of these ABC projects, including supporting the PTC’s first use of this methodology.
Additionally, STV took home the “Gold Boot” Award for outstanding performance and lasting contributions to PTC’s Huckleberry Road ABC project (team pictured above).
For the $88 million, toll-funded Hawk Falls Bridge Replacement, STV is providing construction management services. Davies is the resident engineer for the project, which will replace two aging bridges – NB-610 and 611 – on the Northeastern Extension of Interstate 476 in the Pocono Mountains. The existing 738-foot-long Hawk Falls Bridge – which is functionally obsolete due to lack of shoulders – will be replaced with a new four-lane structure with generous medians and safety shoulders. The project scope also includes the construction of a new single-span bridge over Route 534. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2025.
