JACKSONVILLE, FL – STV, a leading professional services firm that plans, designs and manages infrastructure projects across North America, celebrates the completion of the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) SunRail Phase 2 North, where the firm served as the lead track and structural designer for the commuter rail extension project. The 12.2-mile, $34 million design-build commuter rail extension and passenger station in DeLand, Florida, is the northern terminus for SunRail. All trains will travel south from this new station, which officially opened for riders on Monday, August 12.
STV joined officials from the ribbon cutting ceremony held at the station located on Old New York Avenue. Featuring remarks from FDOT and SunRail, the ceremony was also attended by DeLand Mayor and City Commissioners, Volusia County officials and other key partners, including Herzog Contracting Corporation, the project’s prime contractor.
“This is a significant milestone for DeLand as the station will serve as a gateway to springs, trails and our award-winning downtown,” said Chris Cloudman, Mayor of DeLand. “Visitors can experience our culture and explore the beauty of our area while residents may take advantage of the relaxing trip to explore or work throughout Central Florida.”
STV partnered with FDOT and Herzog to extend the SunRail system in Central Florida north from the DeBary Station to the DeLand Amtrak Station in Volusia County, identified as the third phase of SunRail’s extension. The firm’s scope included four miles of double tracking, communications and electrical engineering, track relocation, the addition of a mainline track and a total rehabilitation of the pedestrian tunnel at Lake Beresford Park. Design for the new track and upgrades to the existing track will allow freight lines to travel at 60 mph and Amtrak and SunRail passenger travel speed at 79 mph. The three phases over 10 years will add more than 60 miles to Central Florida’s premier commuter rail system.
“The opening of SunRail’s newest commuter rail station is 30 years in the making and reflects STV’s commitment to innovative infrastructure solutions that connect communities,” said Keith Jackson, PE, vice president and Florida area manager at STV. “The final section of the SunRail vision will be a pivotal hub for commuters, offering a new, efficient way to travel between western Volusia County and those who commute to downtown Orlando.”
STV has a proven track record of developing and implementing integrated management strategies for transit, rail and highway projects throughout Florida and the nation. FDOT selected STV to provide design services for operational improvements to State Road 202 at the intersections of I-95 and US 1 in Jacksonville and to provide final design documents for the District 3 I-10 widening project in Tallahassee. Additionally, FDI Services selected STV to provide electrical and mechanical inspection services for 18 moveable bridges throughout Broward County. STV served as the engineering consultant for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) Silver Line Extension to the Washington Dulles International Airport project, the lead roadway designer for the Richmond Pulse BRT project to create nearly 2.3 miles of dedicated bus lanes and also served as lead designer for the award-winning CATS LYNX Blue Line Extension project in Charlotte, North Carolina.
