NEW YORK, NY – Leading architectural and engineering firm STV has been named the winner of six prestigious 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York.
STV’s work on a new energy-efficient bus depot in Harlem for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s NYC Transit took the organization’s most distinguished Diamond Award in the transportation category and will go on to compete in the engineering coalition’s national competition.
The awards will be presented at ACEC-NY’s 49th Annual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala to be held March 19 at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan.
STV won awards across five different categories and in addition to winning the Diamond Award, the firm will also be honored for its work on the following projects:

Coney Island Yard Flood Protection Study, Platinum Award for Studies, Research and Consulting Engineering Services based on work following Superstorm Sandy in 2012 to make one of the largest rapid transit maintenance yards in the world more flood resilient;

Delta Air Lines Terminal 4 Redevelopment Phase II at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Platinum Award for Special Projects for the firm’s role in providing construction management services to add gates and improve access for customers;

34th Street Select Bus Service, Gold Award for Transportation on a project to improve bus service on one of Manhattan’s most congested corridors;

New York Police Academy, Silver Award for Building Technology/Systems for the firm’s work providing construction management services on a project to unify all of the NYPD’s training facilities in Queens;

Woodbury Viaduct, Silver Award for Structural Systems based on STV’s role in performing inspections and designing repairs on Metro-North Railroad’s 108-year-old viaduct in Orange County, NY.
STV’s work on NYC Transit’s Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot won top honors in the transportation category for its state-of-the-art, sustainable design to meet NYC Transit’s growing transportation needs while minimally impacting the densely populated surrounding neighborhood.
The 390,000-square-foot facility is capable of accommodating up to 150 buses and features innovative energy- efficient and recovery technology, including a green roof, natural lighting, rainwater recycling, solar air heating, low-emission boilers and heat-recovery air-handling units. It is certified LEED® Gold and will serve as a model of sustainability and energy efficiency for the agency’s future bus depots.
The Engineering Excellence Awards are presented to projects that encompassed both the public and private sector in the following categories: studies, research, and consulting services; building/technology systems; structural systems; surveying and mapping technology; environmental; waste and storm water; water resources; transportation; energy; industrial and manufacturing processes and facilities; and special projects.
Each year, over 60 member firms submit projects that are judged on a rigorous set of criteria, which includes complexity, innovation and value to society. These projects are judged by a panel of industry experts, which includes military and government officials, ACEC National and International leadership, educators from colleges’ and universities’ engineering departments, and leadership from other organizations dedicated to the built environment. Awards are distributed based on the average scores received by these judges, and are assigned one of four levels (in ascending order): Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. The top-rated Diamond award, designed and built entirely within New York State, will earn the Empire Award, which will be announced during the Gala.
