From improving multimodal connections in College Park to enhancing safety at a once-challenging intersection in South Fulton, STV’s Georgia transportation team is helping communities invest in infrastructure that supports mobility, connectivity and future growth. Those efforts were recently recognized by the Georgia Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), which honored two STV-supported projects with 2026 Engineering Project Awards for solutions that demonstrate technical excellence and deliver lasting benefits for the communities they serve.
The recognition extended beyond project delivery. ASCE Georgia also honored Sam Dennard, a roadway engineer in STV’s Duluth office and member of the section’s Board of Directors, for his service and leadership within the profession.
As the section’s treasurer, Dennard received a special commendation from ASCE Georgia President Jeffrey Chiu, who cited his long-standing commitment to the organization and leadership in strengthening coordination and financial stewardship across its branches, institutes and groups.
“Sam has always been there for the section,” Chiu said during the presentation. “When he accepted the Treasurer position and was grinding at it for a few months, he told me that he wanted to stick around in this position for a few years so he could implement some ideas. Let me tell y’all, Sam has done an incredible job and made some great strides in getting the section moving smoother.”
Since opening in 2025, the Global Gateway Connector Bridge has become a key component of College Park’s growing multimodal transportation network, creating a seamless pedestrian and bicycle connection between the city’s historic downtown, the Georgia International Convention Center and surrounding destinations.
Located near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the distinctive suspension-arch structure serves both as critical transportation infrastructure and a recognizable community landmark that reflects the city’s continued investment in connectivity and placemaking.
“The Global Gateway Connector Bridge demonstrates how thoughtful engineering can improve access, strengthen community connections and support a community’s long-term vision for growth,” said Josh Stamm, PE, senior associate and senior engineer. “By creating a safer and more seamless connection for pedestrians and cyclists, the project delivers benefits that extend well beyond the structure itself.”
The project also received recognition from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia last year, further underscoring the team’s innovative approach and engineering excellence.
In South Fulton, a transportation improvement focused on one of the community’s longstanding safety concerns earned recognition for its impact on both mobility and operations. The Union Road at Butner Road Roundabout transformed a high-risk, skewed two-way stop intersection into a modern single-lane roundabout designed to improve safety, traffic flow and long-term operational performance.
Key elements included a new roundabout, upgraded storm drainage infrastructure, enhanced pedestrian accommodations, improved lighting and a landscaped central island with native plantings. The team also incorporated innovative technologies, including traffic simulation tools, GPS machine control and drone monitoring throughout construction.
“This project reflects the strong collaboration among the City of South Fulton Public Works Department, our project partners and community stakeholders,” said Rhandi Gallegos, PE, LEED AP, M.Jd., vice president and Georgia area manager. “Together, we delivered a safer intersection that addresses longstanding needs and supports the city’s future growth. It’s rewarding to see the team’s work recognized by ASCE Georgia.”
