Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) International, a leading industry organization that aspires to advance women in transportation, recently held its International Signature Leadership Training in Washington, D.C. STV’s Lisa Pompei, Transportation Northeast business development and marketing services manager, was selected to join this year’s Executive Leader track, while Danielle LaFrance, associate and senior engineer in STV’s New York City office, and Kristen Van Gilst, associate and digital advisory lead from Charlotte, NC, were selected to participate in the Mid-Career Leadership track.

The multi-day program prepares women to help develop a future of transportation that is equitable, secure, and accessible. Participants heard from expert facilitators and speakers learned how to assess risk, and developed management and other professional skills.

The Executive Leader track is targeted toward women leaders preparing for the highest levels of management.

“The program was very insightful and provided tools and tactics to use in various leadership functions, including strategic planning and change management,” Pompei said. “What I also found valuable was the opportunity to connect with other women in various professional roles and share experiences, challenges, and solutions. It was nice to be in a room with ladies ‘just like us.’”

The Mid-Career Leadership track provides the building blocks for participants to advance in their careers.

“I feel so fortunate to have been selected to participate in this training,” LaFrance said. “I met incredible and talented women from different areas within the transportation industry. The coursework and discussions about real-life issues and experiences were invaluable and helped advance my leadership skills. I look forward to continuing my WTS involvement and encouraging others to get involved.”

Van Gilst, who currently serves as vice president of the WTS Charlotte Metro Chapter, also found the event to be a tremendous growth opportunity.

“This training brought together a cross-section of leaders from across the country, each with unique backgrounds and a blend of both private and public experience,” Van Gilst said. “It was inspiring to hear so many different perspectives and have the opportunity to encourage one another to be the best leaders, community citizens and colleagues we can be.”
