Amtrak Airo Trainsets

Amtrak’s Airo trainsets represent the future of intercity rail in the United States. Amtrak is deploying 83 new trainsets to serve some of its busiest routes, replacing existing railcars that are over 40 years old. Siemens Mobility is manufacturing the trainsets in North Carolina and California, while STV is providing engineering, design review, procurement support and on-site inspection services to verify that the vehicles meet the highest safety, performance and passenger-experience standards.

What is the goal of this project?

Amtrak is seeking to modernize its aging Amfleet railcars and other equipment with a state-of-the-art fleet that improves comfort, accessibility and operational efficiency.

What solutions is STV providing?

STV is supporting the program with program management, design reviews, specification compliance checks, production inspections and testing oversight. Part of the team is embedded in the Sacramento and Lexington facilities, working to see that Amtrak’s requirements are met during assembly.

How does the Airo program improve inter-city passenger rail service?

The majority of the Airo fleet will feature dual-power capability, eliminating the need for time-consuming locomotive swaps. For riders, the benefits include ergonomic seating, 5G Wi-Fi, USB charging, touchless restrooms, and improved accessibility features. This investment supports thousands of American manufacturing jobs across more than 100 suppliers nationwide, and reduces emissions through more efficient propulsion.

What challenges are being overcome?

One unique challenge was designing trainsets that can operate seamlessly across electrified and non-electrified territories. STV helped Amtrak and Siemens vet solutions, including hybrid and battery-enabled technologies.
