Amtrak’s Airo trainsets represent the next generation of intercity rail travel in the United States. Amtrak is deploying 83 new trainsets to modernize service on some of its busiest corridors, replacing aging equipment that is more than 40 years old. Manufactured by Siemens Mobility in Sacramento, California, and Lexington, North Carolina, the Airo fleet introduces significant improvements in comfort, accessibility, sustainability and performance. As part of this national transformation, STV is providing engineering, design review, procurement support and on‑site inspection services to verify that each vehicle meets rigorous safety, reliability and passenger‑experience standards.
What challenges is STV addressing?
Amtrak is undertaking one of the largest fleet modernizations in its history. The new trainsets must seamlessly operate across electrified and non‑electrified territories, integrate next‑generation technologies and meet demanding safety and accessibility requirements. Replacing an aging fleet also requires strict quality oversight during production to ensure long-term value and reliability.
What solutions is STV delivering?
STV is providing program management support; technical design reviews; specification compliance checks; procurement and manufacturing oversight; and on‑site inspections. STV staff embedded at Siemens Mobility’s Sacramento and Lexington facilities are verifying that assembly, systems integration and quality processes meet Amtrak’s operational and performance standards. The team is also evaluating hybrid, dual‑power, and battery‑enabled capabilities to support seamless operation across diverse rail corridors.
How will this project benefit the region?
The Airo fleet enhances passenger comfort with ergonomic seating, panoramic windows, 5G Wi‑Fi, USB charging, touchless restrooms and expanded accessibility features. Dual‑power capability eliminates time‑consuming locomotive swaps, enhancing speed and convenience. The program supports thousands of U.S. manufacturing jobs across more than 100 suppliers and reduces emissions through more efficient propulsion technologies.
