BART Canopy and Escalator Enhancements

As part of a major initiative to improve safety, visibility and operations along San Francisco’s iconic Market Street, Bay Area Rapid Transit advanced a program to install secure, street‑level canopies at multiple station entrances. STV, in partnership with Perkins Eastman, served as the lead design firm of record for the new canopies, which are closely coordinated with BART’s escalator replacement program. Together, these improvements protect escalators from weather-related damage and debris, provide safer access for riders and secure station entrances during non-revenue hours.

What challenges did STV address?

Stations along Market Street serve diverse neighborhoods and experience heavy daily use. Each entrance required customized architectural solutions that improved safety and accessibility while enhancing wayfinding and aligning with district character. The canopies also had to integrate new digital displays, lighting, security features and escalator protection systems – all in active, constrained urban environments.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV designed fully enclosed canopies with real‑time digital displays, improved signage and architectural elements tailored to their neighborhood context, from the Embarcadero waterfront to cultural, civic and commercial districts. The firm provided structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection and wayfinding design, ensuring each canopy supports long‑term durability, functionality and maintenance access. STV’s work included pilot installations at Powell and Civic Center Stations.

How does this project benefit the community?

The canopies enhance safety, visibility and station operations while protecting new escalators and improving overall reliability. Riders benefit from clearer wayfinding, shelter from the weather and a more welcoming and secure station entrance experience.
