Bio Safety Level-3Ag Large Animal Housing Facility

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) $100 million Ames Modernization Program upgraded its existing facilities in Ames, IA, to better serve the department’s vital domestic animal and wildlife research programs.

At the centerpiece of the program is the 145,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art BSL-3Ag large animal housing facility, which cements USDA’s place on the global stage in protecting against emerging diseases and supporting our U.S. livestock industry. Each animal room requires rigid control of temperature, humidity and air movement to provide optimal conditions for the animals’ health and well-being.

STV provided on-site owner’s representative and independent design review services. STV managed commissioning of the facility’s mechanical systems, motor control centers, lighting controls, fire alarm system, bio-safety alarm system, intercom/paging system, access control system and the closed-circuit television system. The firm also led a value engineering effort that reduced the overall cost of the building without compromising functionality and containment levels.

Modernizing a key research facility to thwart emerging diseases and protect livestock.
