Blanco Road Phase II Expansion

Rapid population growth in northern Bexar County and rising traffic volumes along Blanco Road prompted the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority to launch a major corridor expansion program. STV delivered design services for the full 11‑mile corridor, transforming a two‑lane rural roadway into a four‑lane urban collector with medians, dedicated left‑turn lanes and bike lanes. Phase II, spanning 3.2 miles, was developed to increase capacity, enhance operations and modernize drainage infrastructure while remaining entirely within the existing 110‑foot right‑of‑way.

What challenges did STV address?

The corridor travels through the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, requiring sensitive design to protect a vital water supply serving more than 3,600 square miles of South Texas. The project also runs adjacent to Joint Base San Antonio’s Camp Bullis Military Training Reservation and over a 24‑inch high‑pressure gas line. These constraints required precise coordination, innovative engineering solutions and strict environmental stewardship while maintaining mobility for nearby communities.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV provided roadway design, drainage improvements and a traffic control plan that maintained flow during construction. The team coordinated closely with Camp Bullis to minimize impacts to military operations and worked with utility owners to safely design around the gas line. STV’s approach kept the project within budget and on schedule, earning recognition as an award‑winning corridor improvement effort.

How does this project benefit the community?

The expanded roadway improves safety, increases capacity and reduces congestion along a rapidly developing section of San Antonio. Added bike lanes and operational enhancements support multimodal travel and strengthen regional connectivity for commuters, businesses and residents.
