Central Regional Wastewater System Grit Removal Improvements

The Trinity River Authority’s (TRA) Central Regional Wastewater System (CRWS) eliminates pollutants and treats wastewater for over one million residents in West Dallas. After numerous expansions and upgrades over the years, TRA sought the most efficient equipment to enhance performance and reduce odor emissions.

STV designed an innovative removal system for the existing aerated grit basins to catch unwanted particles. Deploying a technique that converts the existing basins into vortex grit removal basins, the upgraded system increased its processing capacity to 350 million gallons a day (MGD).

Working with limited construction space, STV’s team integrated pier systems to support new basins and another grit separate structure alongside the existing one. The facility now boasts six new grit pumps, dewatering units, and new electrical equipment—as well as awards from the Texas and National American Council of Engineering Consultants Excellence in Engineering.

Following grit improvements, STV is providing additional renovation designs to further boost the CRWS facility’s grit capacity to 630 MGD.
