The City of Kyle selected STV to evaluate the feasibility and long‑term benefits of implementing an Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) system to strengthen the community’s water resilience. ASR allows utilities to store excess available water in an underground aquifer, then recover it later to meet peak demands or offset supply shortfalls during drought. ASR is a powerful tool for improving system reliability, reducing dependence on surface reservoirs, and enhancing drought preparedness.
STV is leading the City’s ASR feasibility study, pilot testing and early design efforts to determine optimal capacities, assess aquifer suitability and develop demonstration facilities that will guide long-term implementation.
What challenges is STV addressing?
Kyle is one of the fastest-growing communities in Central Texas, facing increasing pressure on its water supply during peak annual demand and prolonged drought cycles. The City sought a sustainable, adaptable and cost‑effective approach to ensuring long-term water availability while reducing reliance on surface water sources vulnerable to drought and climate fluctuations.
What solutions is STV delivering?
STV is providing comprehensive study, reporting and design-phase services, including evaluating available supply for storage, determining injection and recovery capacity needs, and assessing local aquifer performance. The team is also delivering field services such as core sampling and testing specifications, monitoring well development and planning pilot testing infrastructure to validate long-term ASR potential. These efforts will inform the City’s strategic roadmap for full ASR implementation.
How will this project benefit the region?
By preparing Kyle to adopt ASR technology, this project strengthens regional drought resilience, expands the City’s ability to manage peak water demand and supports sustainable growth. Long-term ASR implementation would improve system reliability, reduce strain on surface water resources and provide a cost‑effective water supply alternative for residents and businesses.
