Dairy and Derita Sanitary Sewers Improvements

Charlotte Water (CLTWater) oversees over $300 million in water and sewer infrastructure improvements annually. With its rapidly growing communities, CLTWater prioritized upgrades at the Dairy and Derita tributary sewer branches.

STV, as a subconsultant to B.R.S. Inc., was selected to future-proof the sewer infrastructure at both sites. The firm performed a sewer system evaluation survey for the Dairy Branch Trunk, designing 15,400 linear feet of 36-inch to 18-inch gravity sewers to replace the roughly 8,500 linear feet of 18-inch to 10-inch gravity sewers that had provided service within the city’s light rail corridor. The redesigned Derita Branch Trunk includes 18,500 linear feet of 30- to 18-inch gravity sewers.

The upgraded sewer systems accommodate the development of multistory, multi-family housing and hotels along the CATS LYNX Blue Line Extension, including craft breweries that generate a high volume of wastewater.

STV’s design incorporated microtunneling to avoid impacts to vehicular traffic and existing subterranean infrastructure while also eliminating multiple aerial sewer creek crossings. Additionally, the firm integrated the removal of exposed piping at the crossings into the design, preserving the area’s natural landscape and reducing environmental risks.

Upgraded sewer system improves quality of life for Charlotte’s expanding communities along its light rail corridor.
