Delaware Army National Guard (DEARNG) Vehicle Maintenance Facility

The Delaware Army National Guard (DEARNG) replaced its aging maintenance facility with a new, 16,357‑square‑foot Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) in Dagsboro, Delaware. Designed to support military readiness, the building features oversized work bays with overhead cranes, tool rooms, storage areas, offices, training spaces and dedicated support zones for the maintenance of DEARNG’s diverse vehicle fleet. The facility achieves LEED® NC 2009 Silver certification and incorporates high‑performance systems, including geothermal HVAC and advanced stormwater management.

What challenges did STV address?

The Guard required a modernized VMF that could remain fully operational throughout construction. The new facility needed to deliver long‑term energy savings, support specialized maintenance activities and meet the Guard’s expanded training and operational needs. Integrating renewable technologies while maintaining strict life‑cycle efficiencies and keeping the existing facility functional posed additional complexity.

What solutions did STV deliver?

Under a design‑build contract, STV provided full architecture and engineering services, utilizing an integrated design process to create a high‑performance envelope and mechanical systems. Energy modeling and simulation tools guided design decisions, enabling the team to reduce overall consumption and improve cost efficiency. The Wohlsen/STV team sequenced construction in phases to maintain uninterrupted operation of adjacent National Guard facilities and ensure mission continuity.

How does this project benefit the Guard and the region?

The VMF enhances DEARNG’s operational readiness by providing state‑of‑the‑art maintenance capacity, improved working conditions and durable, sustainable infrastructure. Reduced energy demand and on‑site renewable systems support long‑term cost savings and environmental stewardship.
