The new, 16,357-square-foot Vehicle Maintenance Facility for the Delaware National Guard (DEARNG) replaced an existing facility and houses oversized work bays (equipped with overhead cranes), offices, training and storage areas, tool rooms and support spaces for the maintenance of DEARNG military vehicles. Achieving LEED® NC 2009 Silver certification, the structure features a geothermal HVAC system and an improved stormwater management system.
Under a design-build contract, STV provided architecture and engineering services for the design of the new Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) for DEARNG. STV’s design team utilized an integrated design process for the building envelope and systems to meet the energy conservation requirements. This approach was implemented through all phases of the design process and incorporated the use of energy simulation software to guide design decisions and enhance the overall life-cycle cost efficiency of the facility.
The Wohlsen/STV design-build team planned a phased construction to allow for the continuous operation of the existing U.S. Army National Guard Facility in support of the Guard’s ongoing mission.
