Delta JFK Terminal Redevelopment Program

At one of the busiest travel hubs in the world, Delta Air Lines launched a $1.5 billion upgrade to expand and redevelop Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). As part of this complex construction program, the airline relocated its international operations from its previous home at Terminal 3, to a newly reconfigured Terminal 4. The makeover features a revamped, fully digitized check-in area, baggage claims and security checkpoint areas that are streamlining international travel. The new terminal boasts premium amenities, like a brand-new Delta One check-in area for business class travelers, new gates and dedicated lounges.

STV served as part of a joint venture that oversaw the redevelopment program, which was completed under multiple phases, including landside and airside improvements. Working together on such a large-scale project required precise coordination. Building Information Modeling software was vital in planning and scheduling, serving as a hub for vital information, including scheduling and cost controls.

Careful coordination of construction within the terminal was also key to the project’s success. There were 14 operational gates actively used by more than 30 carriers at the airport. There were no interruptions in service during construction.

The project was honored at both the national and New York State levels by the American Council of Engineering Companies, as well as the New York/New Jersey Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America.
