As Sound Transit advances one of the most ambitious transit expansions in the nation, the $4‑billion East Link Extension marks a transformative milestone – bringing light rail service to Seattle’s Eastside for the first time. Stretching 14 miles, the extension introduces 10 new stations from Seattle’s International District through Judkins Park, across I‑90 to Mercer Island and South Bellevue, and onward through downtown Bellevue and the Bel‑Red corridor to Redmond. With the opening of the 2 Line Starter Line, eight of these stations now directly link South Bellevue to Redmond Technology Station near Microsoft’s headquarters, delivering faster, more sustainable travel for thousands of daily commuters.
What challenges did STV address?
Delivering light rail across multiple jurisdictions, varied topography and urban environments required highly specialized systems oversight. The project demanded a coordinated approach to integrate complex traction power, communications, signaling, and train control systems across stations, tunnels, guideways and the world’s only passenger rail service operating over a floating bridge within the I‑90 corridor.
What solutions did STV deliver?
As part of the Northwest Transit Systems Partners joint venture with Mott MacDonald, STV oversaw systems construction for the entire corridor. The team provided technical review, construction management, quality assurance, and inspection services for all traction power, communications, signal and train control systems – creating safe, efficient and fully integrated operations for the line’s launch and long-term reliability.
How does this project benefit the region?
The East Link Extension expands high‑capacity transit into rapidly growing Eastside communities, offering fast and reliable service while reducing roadway congestion. With anticipated ridership of more than 50,000 daily passengers by 2030, the extension strengthens regional economic connectivity and supports sustainable mobility across the Puget Sound.
