Hawk Falls Bridge Replacement

STV is providing construction management and inspection services for the Hawk Falls Bridge Replacement Project on the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Northeastern Extension (I-476) in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. The project includes full replacement of the Hawk Falls Bridge (NB-610) over Mud Run Gorge and the nearby Hickory Run Road NB-611 Bridge, improving a critical section of Turnpike infrastructure originally constructed in the 1950s.

The replacement Hawk Falls Bridge is a 720-foot-long steel-deck arch spanning Mud Run Gorge in Hickory Run State Park. It carries two lanes of traffic in each direction, with wider shoulders and medians to support safer travel along this section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

What challenges is STV addressing?
The project is being delivered in a steep, environmentally sensitive setting within Hickory Run State Park, requiring careful coordination to protect natural resources while advancing construction activities. The bridge’s height above Mud Run Gorge and constrained access conditions add complexity to construction sequencing, safety planning and inspection efforts. Maintaining traffic flow on a critical section of the Turnpike while replacing major infrastructure elements has required close coordination among contractors, Turnpike staff and other project stakeholders.

What solutions is STV delivering?
STV is supporting the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission with construction management and inspection services throughout the program, including oversight of demolition and construction activities, sequencing support, quality control and environmental compliance.

How will the project benefit the community?
When complete, the new Hawk Falls Bridge will provide a safer, more durable crossing through Mud Run Gorge. The replacement structure improves roadway safety and is designed to reduce long-term maintenance requirements, thereby extending the bridge’s service life.
