In Hazle Township, Pennsylvania, STV led the design and delivery of a new 50,000‑square‑foot bus maintenance and storage facility for Hazleton Public Transit (HPT), one of the largest capital projects ever undertaken by the agency. Supported by a $10 million U.S. Department of Transportation Buses and Bus Facilities Grant, the project strengthens HPT’s ability to operate a more efficient and sustainable transit system for the region.
What challenges did STV address?
With a growing compressed natural gas (CNG) fleet and aging support infrastructure, Hazleton Public Transit required a modernized facility that could streamline maintenance, expand storage capacity, and ensure safe, reliable fueling operations. The lack of climate-controlled storage and adequate maintenance bays limited operational efficiency, while the agency also needed dedicated administrative and training spaces to support workforce development.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV provided comprehensive multidisciplinary services, including project management; civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, industrial, and environmental design. The new facility was designed to accommodate 20-25 CNG buses, integrate a full CNG fueling station and include three maintenance bays, a bus wash, and administrative and training areas. During construction, STV also supported shop drawing reviews, change order evaluations, as‑built documentation and closeout services to ensure quality and compliance.
How does this project benefit the region?
The completed facility enhances the reliability and sustainability of public transit in northeastern Pennsylvania. With modern infrastructure and expanded capacity, HPT can better serve riders, support cleaner fleet operations, and continue growing its environmentally friendly CNG program. The project strengthens long-term mobility across the Hazleton region while supporting local economic and community development.
