The I‑385 Widening program in Greenville County, South Carolina, delivered critical traffic relief for the more than 60,000 motorists who rely on this key interstate every day. As design manager for the $65 million design‑build initiative, STV led the widening of 5.5 miles of roadway from four to six lanes and managed resurfacing work along an additional 1.5 miles. The program also included reconstruction of several ramps to meet current design standards and the widening of dual bridges at Exits 30 and 31, creating a safer, more efficient corridor through one of the Upstate’s most heavily traveled regions.
What challenges did STV address?
Maintaining mobility during major interstate reconstruction required an innovative traffic management strategy. With high daily traffic volumes and limited work‑zone flexibility, the design‑build team needed a solution that supported continuous construction access while minimizing impacts on drivers. The schedule also demanded accelerated delivery to match regional growth and commuter needs.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV and Lane Construction developed a creative maintenance and protection-of-traffic plan that used a temporary access ramp built directly to the I-385 median. This approach provided dedicated construction access, shortened the schedule and reduced traffic disruptions. STV delivered roadway, structural and pedestrian safety design services and oversaw upgrades to bridges, ramps and pavement systems, ensuring all elements met SCDOT performance requirements.
How does this project benefit the community?
The widened I‑385 reduces congestion, improves travel reliability and enhances safety for one of Greenville County’s busiest routes. By strengthening connections to local roads and regional destinations, the project supports economic development, freight movement and daily mobility for residents and visitors.
