The Betsy Ross Interchange plays a crucial role in one of the most extensive highway improvement programs in the northeastern United States—the reconstruction and revival of I-95 in Pennsylvania. Located in Philadelphia, the Betsy Ross Interchange comprises a complex, multitiered network of roadways, ramps and bridges that connect travelers to I-95.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) selected STV to provide a range of environmental, engineering and construction-related services for the multistage $880 million reconfiguration, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Betsy Ross Interchange.
Complex site conditions prompted a pilot initiative led by PennDOT and STV to develop the nation’s first steel curved tubular flange girder. STV also provided preliminary engineering for each construction phase, including field surveys; right-of-way, drainage, and erosion and sedimentation control plans; pavement, highway lighting and signage design; hydrologic and hydraulic studies; geotechnical investigations; utility coordination; public involvement programs; and a Categorical Exclusion Evaluation study.
