A key part of a $1.3 billion program, the John Kilpatrick Turnpike (JKT) Southwest Loop Extension project encompassed the design of a 3.5-mile tollway section and included the expansion of the JKT/I-40 interchange to add traffic movements to and from the south; new interchanges at SW 15th Street, SW 29th Street and Sara Road; 10 mainline bridges; three ramp bridges; and the reconstruction of the Sara Road Bridge over I-40.
STV was contracted by the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) to serve as the prime design consultant for this initiative.
Due to the bond sale financing of the Driving Forward program, an accelerated project development and construction schedule was set by the OTA. The project team engaged the OTA and other stakeholders in an extremely collaborative partnership to deliver this transformative program. This collaboration included identifying ways to minimize the right-of-way footprint and avoid displacements of businesses and residents along the corridor, as well as innovative designs for bridges that simplified fabrication.
The completed project brought needed relief to motorists by easing traffic congestion, improving the safety of the roadway, spurring economic growth and increasing the connectivity of the region. It also received an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Oklahoma.
