As part of Massport’s ongoing program to replace aging HVAC systems at Logan International Airport, STV provided engineering design services for the modernization of two fan rooms within Terminal B. This first phase of improvements focused on replacing outdated constant‑volume air handling units that had reached the end of their service life, marking a major step toward a more efficient and reliable heating and cooling system for the terminal’s departure gates.
What challenges did STV address?
Massport needed to upgrade critical mechanical equipment in an active terminal environment while meeting modern energy, safety and code requirements. The existing HVAC systems were inefficient, difficult to maintain and no longer aligned with current best practices for energy recovery, airflow control and operational flexibility. The challenge was to design solutions that improved performance and reliability without disrupting airport operations.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV worked closely with Massport to develop a comprehensive conditions report outlining preliminary architectural, mechanical, electrical, and structural requirements. The team then designed the replacement of two substantial air handler units – each measuring 36′ x 12′ x 13′ but providing different airflow capacities – to meet current standards for economizers, variable‑speed fans and energy‑recovery systems. These upgrades position the terminal to realize long‑term energy and operational savings.
How does this project benefit the region?
By modernizing essential HVAC equipment, the project enhances passenger comfort, improves system reliability and reduces energy consumption at one of New England’s busiest transportation hubs. The upgrades support Massport’s long‑term sustainability goals while ensuring Logan Airport continues to deliver a safe, comfortable experience for millions of travelers.
