LYNX Blue Line
The Charlotte Area Transit System's (CATS) Blue Line light rail system has been a tremendous boon for the City of Charlotte since it first opened, generating more than a billion dollars in economic activity throughout the corridor while far exceeding projected ridership numbers. STV performed project management support services, including design review and constructability analysis of trackwork, facilities and system elements, during the design and construction of the 9.6-mile light rail line.
Because of the line's success, the city chose to extend service from Center City to the UNC Charlotte campus, selecting STV to provide planning and design services for the new 9.3-mile Blue Line Extension (BLE). The $1.16 billion initiative includes 11 stations accommodating three-car trains, three parking garages, one surface parking lot, and a storage yard with an operations building. STV provided transportation planning, environmental, and preliminary engineering services, and is now providing final design, advertise/bid/award, and construction phase services in support of this endeavor.
