CATS Blue Line

The Charlotte Area Transit System’s Blue Line – the region’s first light rail line – has become a powerful catalyst for economic growth, generating more than a billion dollars in investment while far exceeding ridership expectations. The 9.6‑mile corridor runs from Uptown Charlotte south to I‑485, serving major business districts, cultural destinations and regional mobility hubs. As part of this landmark program, STV provided project management support, design review and constructability analysis during design and construction to ensure the successful delivery of this transformative transit investment.

What challenges did STV address?

Introducing Charlotte’s first light rail line required integrating infrastructure into a fast‑growing urban environment, coordinating with multiple stakeholders and designing stations that serve both daily commuters and large event crowds. A major challenge involved ensuring that the 15 stations – including the high-demand Convention Center Station – were fully integrated with the existing bus network, park-and-ride facilities and parking decks. In addition, communications systems and operations needed to be deployed consistently along a new corridor.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV conducted design reviews and constructability analyses for trackwork, facilities and system elements, helping refine and streamline the Blue Line’s engineering. The team oversaw installation, testing and commissioning of communications systems and provided construction management services throughout delivery. Under an ongoing contract amendment, STV continues to support CATS with operational services across all system components.

How does this project benefit the region?

The Blue Line expands transit access, reduces roadway congestion and drives economic development along the alignment. By providing reliable, high‑capacity service, it enhances the quality of life and supports long-term sustainable growth across Charlotte.
