Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot

At the historic corner of 146th Street and Lenox Avenue – home to transit facilities since 1939 –the Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot represents New York City Transit’s (NYC Transit) forward‑looking investment in cleaner, more efficient transportation. The state-of-the-art, 400,000‑square‑foot facility replaces an outdated depot with a high-performance, sustainable and community-focused operations center designed to support the city’s growing fleet of ultra-low‑emission buses.

What challenges did STV address?

NYC Transit required a modern depot that could meet 21st-century operational needs while aligning with aggressive sustainability goals. The new facility needed to support advanced vehicle technologies, reduce environmental impacts and enhance efficiency – all on a dense urban site in a residential Harlem neighborhood. The project also demanded a design-build approach that minimized construction conflicts and controlled project costs.

What solutions did STV deliver?

As architect‑ and engineer‑of‑record, STV delivered integrated architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, geotechnical, industrial and communications design services. Leveraging Building Information Modeling (BIM), the team produced fully coordinated design documents that reduced field conflicts and accelerated construction. The depot incorporates green roof systems, rainwater harvesting for bus washing, low‑emission boilers, heat‑recovery units, natural lighting and solar air heating, culminating in a facility that achieved LEED® Gold certification. The building’s façade also features a large‑scale mosaic artwork by Shinique Smith, marking the first MTA Arts & Design commission for a bus depot.

How does this project benefit the region?

The Mother Clara Hale Depot supports New York’s transition to cleaner, quieter bus operations while contributing to neighborhood vitality through sustainable design and public art. The facility improves fleet reliability, reduces emissions, lowers operating costs and enhances the daily commute for riders across Upper Manhattan.
