STV is providing bridging design services for a new Pre-K-8 school in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to replace the former Joseph Battin School No. 4, which was closed due to structural issues. The 139,440-square-foot facility is designed to serve approximately 970 students in a modern, enriching educational environment that supports academic growth and community identity.

Designing a major replacement school requires balancing educational function, community context and long-term durability. STV’s team is translating the New Jersey Schools Development Authority’s (NJSDA) educational vision into detailed bridging documents – defining materials, room layouts, performance standards and site plans – while respecting the varied needs of students, educators and stakeholders.

What solutions is STV delivering?

STV developed schematic and bridging design documents that establish the architectural vision, educational specifications, and performance criteria for the new school. The design incorporates seven Pre-K classrooms, 37 K-8 classrooms, special education rooms, science labs, art studios, a media center with maker space, auditorium, gymnasium, music room and cafeteria. Architectural inspiration draws from Elizabeth’s historic brick character and supports intuitive wayfinding and age-appropriate learning zones.
