Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal A

Since opening in 2023, the new Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) stands as an emblem of an airport renaissance for New Jersey and the larger New York Metropolitan region. For this program, the airport’s existing facility was replaced with a 1-million-square-foot, 33-gate domestic terminal that is designed to meet the increasing volume and needs of travelers for years to come. As a testament to its sustainable design, the terminal received a LEED® Gold Certification, surpassing the project’s original target of Silver

Featuring a brand-new arrivals and departures hall, the terminal boasts the first fully automated security screening checkpoint in the country. Innovative sensor technology reduces wait times and regionally inspired concessions, retail and public artwork celebrate the people and history of New Jersey. Winning numerous awards, including UNESCO’s Prix Versailles Special Prize for an Exterior, as well as the Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey, the terminal is one of the largest design-build projects delivered in New Jersey’s history.

STV, in association with Grimshaw, served as the architect- and engineer-of-record for the design-build team led by Tutor Perini/Parsons. The firm designed the new, T-shaped terminal building, a 10,000-square-foot emergency generator building and a 1,000-foot-long pedestrian bridge to the terminal’s new Consolidated Rental Car Facility.

Integrated into the design, sustainability features include more efficient water fixtures; a “cool roof” and light-colored pavements to reduce heat gain; energy-efficient indoor lighting and other electrical and mechanical systems; and regionally sourced materials with high recycled content from indigenous resources.
